Lady Dragons tame Bulldogs

The Lady Dragon basketball team started out fast on Tuesday, and were never threatened. Sonoma beat the San Rafael Bulldogs, 54-30 in a non-league tilt.

The Lady Dragons led 15-2 at the end of one quarter and 27-12 at the half. Sonoma increased the margin to 47-26 at the end of three quarters.

Alyssa Schimm led Sonoma with 18 points, and she had six steals. Amy Stanfield had eight points, Jasmine Simpson-Gomez and Annie Neles each had six points, Annika Ginter and Sofia Vitale had five points each, while Kennedy Midgley, Erin Gylfe and Sophie Lucchetti had two points apiece.

Simpson-Gomez pulled down six boards while Ginter and Midgley each had five. Ginter and Vitale each had four steals while Simpson-Gomez had three.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 2-0 record on the year.

Sonoma is hosting the Dragon Classic this weekend as play started Thursday evening, results not available at press time. In addition to the Lady Dragons, other teams include Analy, Vintage, San Marin, Montgomery, Ukiah, Drake and NorthGate.

Friday’s games start at 4 p.m. with the loser of the NorthGate-Sonoma game facing the loser of the Ukiah-Drake game while the San Marin-Montgomery loser faces the Analy-Vintage loser at 5:30. The winners’ bracket starts at 7 with the Analy-Vintage winner facing the San Marin-Montgomery winner while the Ukiah-Drake winner faces the Sonoma-NorthGate winner at 8:30.

On Saturday, the seventh-place game is set for 1:30 p.m. followed at 3 by the consolation championship, while the third-place game will tip off at 4:30 and the championship game at 6.
