The Sonoma Valley High football season came to an end Saturday evening as the Dragons lost their opening-round game in the North Coast Section Division 4 playoffs.

The 14-seeded Dragons faced the third-seeded Harker School from San Jose, and lost 56-0.

Harker put up 28 points in the first quarter and another 21 in the second to take a 49-0 halftime lead. Harker scored another touchdown in the third quarter to end their scoring at 56.

With less than a minute to go in the game, Sonoma had the ball on the Harker 2-yard line, but couldn’t punch the ball in. The loss brings the Dragon season to a 3-5 overall record. The Dragons were 3-2 in Sonoma County League play in this, the last year of the Sonoma County League.

Next year, the Dragons will be in a new, yet-unnamed league with longtime foe Petaluma, Casa Grande, Justin-Siena, Napa, Vintage and American Canyon. The rest of the SCL – El Molino, Analy, Piner, Healdsburg and Elsie Allen – is being merged into the North Bay League to make a 12-team league. But the league will be broken up into the NBL I and NBL II.

Sonoma, even though it will be in the new league, will have the opportunity to petition into another league on a sport-by-sport basis.
