After fires, Dragons back in action

Spikers were back in action this weekend; other sports forge ahead this week|

While school resumed Monday at Sonoma Valley High, the athletes participating in fall sports were already back at practice last Thursday, Oct. 19.

Because of the fire storm over the last 14 days, school hasn't been in session and athletic contests were postponed.

Athletic Director Bob Midgley said that depending on the 2 p.m. air quality index reports, the athletes could practice either inside or outside. If the air quality index is 150 or above, the athletes will practice indoors. But if the air quality index is below 150, they can practice outdoors.

The volleyball team was the first team to resume play as they had a match at El Molino on Saturday. The spikers had three games postponed – against Petaluma, El Molino and Analy. Sonoma will host Petaluma Tuesday, Oct. 24, 4, 5 and 6:30 p.m. and then host Analy the following night, Wednesday, Oct. 25, for Senior Night. Games are at 4, 5 and 6:30 p.m.

The Sonoma County League volleyball tournament won't be played so the schools have that week to make up the matches that were postponed. Midgley said volleyball can schedule three matches in a week.

The Dragon football team lost two games – against Galena High of Reno, Nevada, and Piner, which was supposed to have been played Saturday, Oct. 21. Piner was hit especially hard by the fires since it's on the northwest side of Santa Rosa and included the Coffey Park subdivision which lost entire blocks of homes.

'We can't reschedule football,' Midgley said. 'We can't play two games in a week.'

The Dragon gridders next game is scheduled for next Friday, Oct. 27, against Healdsburg. It's also the Dragons' final home game of the season. Sonoma finishes the season the following week at El Molino.

The water polo teams will try to make up their postponed matches – against Cardinal Newman, Justin-Siena and Ukiah. Water polo doesn't have a conference tournament. They go right to the North Coast Section tournament and the Lady Dragons have a good shot of qualifying for the NCS.

The cross country teams will have time to finish their schedule – they lost two meets but the SCL meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 4, and is scheduled to be run at Spring Lake Park in Santa Rosa.

The tennis girls lost three matches – against El Molino, Piner and Petaluma. Midgley said Piner has folded its girls tennis team, so that's one match that won't be made up. The SCL tournament is scheduled for this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Santa Rosa Junior College.

The girls' golf team's season ended earlier this week with the SCL tournament.
