The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon Spikers got their Sonoma County League schedule off on the right foot Tuesday, beating the Healdsburg Greyhounds, 3-1.

The scores were 25-8, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-11.

Sonoma was in control all night long. After a quick first set, Sonoma ran off six straight points to start the second set and led 11-1 at one point and kept the margin between eight and 10 points.

Even the set that the Greyhounds won, Sonoma didn’t let them get out of sight trailing by no more than six points.

And in the fourth set, the score was knotted at 1-1, 3-3 and 4-4 before the Lady Dragons pulled away with nine straight points to make it a comfortable 13-4 and Sonoma cruised home for the win.

“This was the best blocking (at the net) so far this season,” said Coach Rand Rognlien. “It was great to see. We just dominated at the net.”

Emily Gonzalez and Kiana Janson each had six kills while Gianna Bruton and Layla Schoeningh each had five.

It was a match where every got to play. “Everybody contributed,” Rognlien said. “This gives us more options down the road and helps us develop players.”

Wednesday, Sonoma swept the Maria Carrillo Pumas, 25-12, 25-22 and 25-15.

Bruton and Schoeningh each had five kills, Raegan Cordero have five service aces and Marissa White had 13 digs.

“Overall, it was our best played match of the early season,” Rognlien said. “It was a great win to go into their gym and take three-straight against a tough Division 2 team. I’m proud of all the girls’ hard work at practice and progress to keep improving our game.”

Last Saturday, the Lady Dragons traveled to Carmichael for a 30-team tournament. Sonoma finished 2-2 which was good for 11th place.

“The level of competition was very high,” Rognlien said. “But we didn’t play at the level we know we can play.”

Temperatures in the gym were in excess of 90 degrees, but Rognlien didn’t use that as an excuse. “It was that hot for everybody,” he added.

Thursday, the Lady Dragons faced Piner, results not available at press time.

Tuesday, Elsie Allen comes to Pfeiffer Gym for JV and varsity matches only. JV starts at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30. Then Thursday, the Lady Dragons go to Petaluma.
