The Sonoma Valley High School Dragons (14-11), ranked No. 11 in post-season playoffs, went down in the first round of their Division 3 series after briefly leading 1-0 against the Moreau Catholic Mariners (17-8) in the top of the first inning.

Sonoma could not hold onto the lead, giving up two runs to Moreau in the bottom of the first, two more in the second and a fifth run in the third inning. The Mariners scored in the bottom of the sixth inning as well.

“We didn’t play very well. We threw a lot of pitches. It’s a curse we have had all year, not throwing strikes and going deep into counts,” Sonoma coach Don Lyons said. “Moreau Catholic was better than us today, but we didn’t do ourselves any favors with the number of pitches and two costly (defensive) mistakes.”

Tanner Granzella pitched a complete game for the win while Sonoma starter Carson Snyder took the loss, going 3 ? innings and giving up seven hits.

Three Sonoma errors led to two unearned runs for the Mariners. The game was on the Moreau Catholic home field in Hayward.

“We couldn’t get outs; that’s all there is to it. Defensively we made mistakes at the wrong time,” Lyons said. “This season we were leading in 22 of our 25 games but only won 14 games. We didn’t hold leads very well.”
