Lady Dragons pummel Piner

Sonoma stays perfect in SCL play|

It took a while for the Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon hoopsters to get going Friday night, but once they did, they ran away from Piner – and are still undefeated in Sonoma County League play.

The Lady Dragons won 41-12.

Sonoma scored 23 of its 41 points from the free throw line, and that’s with sinking only 50 percent. They were 23 of 46 from the charity stripe.

Neither team could score early, and the Prospectors actually led 4-3 at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter. But then senior Kayla Field hit two baskets and two free throws in a little more than a minute and all of a sudden Sonoma’s lead was 10-4.

When Field hit a bucket at the 2:30 mark of the second quarter, the Lady Dragons pushed the margin to 20-7, and finished the half with a more-than-comfortable 24-9 lead. Piner managed to score in the first minute and the last minute of the third quarter, but the Lady Dragons ran off nine straight points in between and led 33-12 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, with the Lady Dragon press stifling Piner all night. The Lady Dragons managed to keep the Prospectors off the scoreboard entirely in the fourth quarter as they rang up an 8-0 margin – and six of the eight were from the free throw line.

Nine of the Lady Dragons scored led by Field’s 12, senior Alanna Johnston had nine, junior Amy Stanfield had seven, sophomore Annie Neles had six, junior Alyssa Schimm and sophomore Annika Ginter had two each while senior Grace Cutting, senior Katie Stovall and junior Sydney VonGober each had one.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 14-5 overall mark and a 6-0 SCL record.

The Lady Dragons have three games this week – today, Healdsburg visits Pfeiffer Gym. The freshmen play Napa at 4:30 p.m., the JVs face Healdsburg at 6 and the varsity game is at 7:30. Thursday, Sonoma travels to Elsie Allen and Saturday, the Lady Dragons have a non-conference game at Pinole Valley.
