Lady Dragon softballers’ bats fall silent

Petaluma takes pitchers’ duel, 1-0|

The Sonoma Valley High softball Dragons’ bats were uncharacteristically silent Thursday as the Dragons dropped a 1-0 decision to Petaluma.

In a pitchers’ duel, the Trojans pushed a run across in the top of the first and that was the extent of the scoring for both sides.

Sonoma managed only four hits, but held Petaluma to five.

“Our bats were quiet (Thursday), we were guessing in the box and weren’t aggressive like we usually are,” said Coach Keeley Ray. “It was definitely a defensive game.”

There was a scary moment in the top of the fourth, when Petaluma’s Chandler Mevis hit a line drive that hit pitcher Jenna Ebert in the head. Ebert left the game, and was icing her head the rest of the game. Ray said Ebert went to the emergency room after the game, but doctors didn’t find symptoms of a concussion.

Sonoma got a runner as far as second base in the fourth inning when junior Lyndsey Lee walked and took second on a groundout by senior Maddy Lentini, but that was as far as she got. Freshman Ally Alcayaga singled to open the sixth, but was erased in a double play.

Petaluma threatened in the top of the seventh when the first two batters singled, and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. But junior Alissa Orr struck out the next batter and forced the next batter to pop out.

The Lady Dragons went down in order in the seventh and absorbed a 1-0 loss.

“The difference was Petaluma came fighting and we played timid,” Ray said.

The loss gives the Lady Dragons a 14-2 overall record, and a 4-1 Sonoma County League record.

Sonoma will be on the road this week with games at Piner today, Tuesday, and at Healdsburg on Thursday.
