Tennis boys fall to Petaluma

Next up is SCL meet at SRJC, Thursday and Friday|

The Sonoma Valley High tennis team split the singles matches Thursday against Petaluma, but lost all three doubles matches and fell to the Trojans, 5-2, in a battle for first place in the Sonoma County League.

“The match was tied 2-2 after singles, then the one and three doubles teams were up a set. Petaluma battled back, winning the match and clinching the SCL title,” said Coach Walt Williams. “It was a hard fought, well played match on both sides.”

In singles play, Petaluma’s Connor Gors beat senior Matt McKale, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1, in the number one slot. At two, sophomore Erik Serbicki beat Petaluma’s Zach Leno, 6-1 and 7-5. At three, Petaluma’s Adam Volk topped senior Liam Handron 6-4 and 7-5 while at four, senior Elias Sosa Mercado defeated Petaluma’s Vince Bermont, 6-4 and 6-1.

The Trojans then swept the doubles play.

At one, the team of Hayden Dennis and Alex Dodd beat senior Sam Weisiger and freshman Andrew McKale, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker.

Petaluma’s number two team of Colton Moss and Khalil Tams defeated sophomore Silvan Kopp and senior Ben Finley, 6-2 and 6-2. And Petaluma completed the sweep with the team of Farris Mughannam and Griffin Epstein topping senior Javier Rico and senior Corbin Cook, 4-6, 6-1 and 6-2.

The Dragons return to play Thursday and Friday, when they will be competing in the Sonoma County League tournament at the SRJC courts in Santa Rosa.
