Benicia hands softballers first loss

Lady Dragons at Piner, Healdsburg next week|

The Lady Dragon softballers suffered their first defeat of the year Friday when Benicia beat them in a tournament in Napa.

Sonoma won two of three games in the tournament, beating Analy, 6-5 in five innings; losing to Benicia, 7-0; and beating Lexington, 12-0 in three innings. The games in the tournament had an 80-minute time limit on Friday and a 90-minute time limit on Saturday.

Friday, Benicia scored six times in the second inning and once more in the fourth and shut out the Lady Dragon. Saturday, the Dragons ran off to a 6-1 lead over Analy before the Tigers pushed four runs across in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough and Sonoma hung on for a 6-5 win. Later, the Dragons dismantled Lexington 12-0 in three innings as junior Molly Brown got her first homer of the year.

Also on Friday, the Lady Dragons played El Molino in a game that had been postponed from the day before because of the rain. Sonoma trounced El Mo 16-3. Sonoma scored once in the first, twice in the second, once in the third, three times in the fifth, once in the sixth and then pushed eight runs across in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Dragons are 14-1 overall and 4-0 in SCL play.

Sonoma’s game Tuesday against Analy was postponed for rain, and is rescheduled for May 5. The Lady Dragons faced Petaluma on Thursday, results not available as of press time. The Lady Dragons are at Piner on Tuesday and at Healdsburg on Thursday.
