Stompers seek host families in Sonoma for coming season

The Sonoma Stompers Professional Baseball Club has put the call out for a few more host families to house players for the 2019 season. Players have arrived with gloves oiled and cleats sharpened for the opening game, which took place on June 1. The season ends in late August.

Host families are asked to provide “a room and a bed, as well as access to a bathroom and a kitchen.” According to the Stompers front office, hosts are not required to provide meals or transportation.

Those who can host a player, or multiple players, will get “tickets for every Stompers home game for the season (up to four per household based on family members who live in your house).”

Host families also receive discounts on merchandise and regular game tickets for friends or other family members who attend a game with the host family members whenever they make their purchases at the Stompers Fan Shop.

Host families are part of a long-standing baseball tradition. A total of 15 players from the San Jose Giants lived with host families and then went on to win a World Series title after being called up to the San Francisco Giants.

Locally, the Stompers have promoted at least a half dozen plays each year to higher independent leagues, including fan favorites Isaac Wenrich (who beat then-50-year-old Jose Canseco in a home run derby in 2014) and Joel Carranza, who moved up to the Can-Am League late in 2015 and helped his new team win the championship. Pitchers Dylan Stoops and Santos Saldivar (2015) both pitched in Sonoma before being signed to minor league contracts.
