Sonoma Valley softball girls wallop Marin Catholic, 13-1

“Sonoma played another great game today!” enthused coach Keely Ray of her Dragon girls softball team, on the heels of their 13-1 shellacking of Marin Catholic. The win marks the sixth in a row for the girls team, all non-league games against regional opponents.

What started out as a pitchers’ duel through three innings of scoreless ball pitting junior Jenna Ebert against the Wildcat hurler, then the Dragons scraped together a run following freshman Kennedy Midgley’s double, a walk and a base hit by another frosh, Ally Alcayaga, to take a 1-0 lead.

The Dragons got another run in the fifth inning, when Midgley again delivering with an RBI single up the middle to score junior Lyndsey Lee who had opened the inning with a single.

Marin Catholic decided they’d get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, slapping four of their five hits against starting pitcher Jenna Ebert in quick succession, which resulted in only a single run and a score at the end of five, 2-1.

But the wheels came off for Marin Catholic in the top of the sixth. Their pitcher walked the first five batters for two hitless runs before she was lifted, but the big inning had just begun. It ended with 11 runs, including three RBIs from senior Maddy Lentini on a double, and two more from junior Lyndsey Lee.

Allison Orr came in to close out the game with a shutout bottom of the sixth and the Lady Dragon softball team added to their winning streak.

“I’m very proud of my girls and the work they’ve been putting in,” said Coach Keely. “It’s truly paying off for us!”

The Wednesday game at the College of Marin came two days after a Monday afternoon game, March 13, where the Lady Dragons beat Pinole Valley 7-4.

“Alissa Orr pitched her best game yet and held it together for us,” said Ray.

The game was tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh with two outs freshman Kaliyah Hensic hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop who bobbled it, allowing Hensic to reach. Then Alcayaga came in and hit a two-run homer to make it 7-4. Orr closed it out for the win.

The team’s next game is at home, at noon on Saturday against American Canyon. Then the spring vacation break intervenes before the return to action against Drake in San Anselmo on March 27.

League play begins Tuesday, March 28, on the road against Petaluma.
