San Marin ends Dragons’ season

First round exit in NCS hoops tourney|

The Sonoma Valley High Dragon hoopsters took a beating Tuesday in the opening round of the North Coast Section tournament.

San Marin disposed of the Dragons 59-27, ending the Dragons’ season.

The Mustangs start fast and held a 15-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Coach Mike Boles said the Dragons couldn’t get into their offense.

“We had a difficult time getting into an offensive flow,” Boles said. “Credit goes to San Marin’s defense. They were smothering and totally got us away from getting good looks. When we did shoot, we seemed rushed.”

Sonoma’s offensive woes continued into the second quarter as San Marin put another 15 points on the board and led 30-8 at the half.

“We again struggled offensively and it impacted us defensively,” the coach said.

The Dragons managed a few more points in the second half, but they couldn’t get out of the hole.

“This isn’t exactly how we envisioned this game going,” Boles said. “San Marin was the better team tonight. They played with confidence and the confidence came from their experience. Our effort was there, but not our execution. We just didn’t have any flow or crispness offensively. The positive was our players gained some valuable NCS playoff experience.”

Boles praised his seniors – Luke Severson, Eric Bailey, Colton Mertens and Nazir Lyle.

“Our seniors have paved the way and we’re grateful for their leadership,” Boles said. “We won’t allow this final game define our season. The players know how much work and sweat they have invested in Dragon basketball. We, as coaches, are proud of them and their season.”

Severson led the Dragons in scoring with 17 points while Mertens had six.

The loss leaves the Dragons with a 12-15 overall record.
