Sonoma grapplers easily handle Elsie

Three wins by pins|

The Sonoma Valley High Dragon wrestlers won six of nine contested matches Wednesday, and beat Elsie Allen, 45-21.

Dragon Coach Nico Saldana was pleased with his grapplers.

“Overall, we wrestled well,” he said. “Elsie Allen wrestled with a lot of fight, and made our wrestlers earn the victory.”

There was a double forfeit at 108 pounds. At 115, freshman Eric Hudson received a forfeit.

At 122, freshman Ean Schiffman lost by fall to Reyes. “Ean wrestled well for his first time against a varsity opponent. The score was closer before he was pinned,” Saldana said. “I’m looking forward to watching Ean continue to grow and develop as a wrestler.”

Sophomore Macklyn Liss, 128, won on a technical fall. Saldana said Liss has been wrestling with a lot of confidence - and it shows. Sonoma lost at 134 on a forfeit.

Sophomore Andrew Beatty, 140, lost 9-6 to Aguirre. “This was Elsie Allen’s top wrestler,” Sandana said. “A good match that went back and forth.”

At 147, freshman Hank Schoeningh won by a fall over Loyd. “Hank continues to improve and came away with the fall in the second period,” the coach said.

Sophomore Ryan Sherwood, 154, lost by fall to Nguyen.

Junior Nick Biaggi, at 162, won by a fall over Nolasco. “He gave the team a needed fall - and six points toward the team score,” Saldana added.

Senior Aiden VanHeerden won a 14-3 major decision over Rosales at 172. Senior Noah Bartolome, 184, didn’t waste time as he won with fall in the first period over Paul.

Sophomore Tyler Winslow received a forfeit at 197. Junior Dean Dunham won a decision over Heng 4-2.

“It was a tough match between two evenly matched competitors,” Saldana said. “This was the second time the two have met. The last match, Dean won 1-0.”

Sophomore Gianni Palacio received a forfeit in the heavyweight class.

Today the JVs will compete in the Prince of the Mat tourney in Windsor. Saturday, the varsity will be competing in the King of the Mat tourney, also in Windsor.
