Lady Dragons stay perfect in SCL

Cagers win 11th straight game|

Though it wasn’t pretty, the Lady Dragon cagers Tuesday beat El Molino, 51-40 for their 11th straight win.

Coach Jann Thorpe wasn’t real happy with her team’s performance.

“We had too many careless turnovers and lack of consistency on the offensive end,” she said.

Sonoma took an 18-11 first-quarter lead, but allowed the Lions to not only get back into the game, but take a one-point halftime lead at 22-21 as the Lady Dragons managed only three points in the second quarter.

“After the game, the girls and I talked about the focus going into the game,” Thorpe said. “We need to be more consistent and play a much better all-around game.”

The Lady Dragons came out of the break and outscored El Mo 16-3 in the third quarter to give themselves a comfortable lead.

The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter and Sonoma came away with a nine-point victory.

Senior Kayla Field had 19 points to go with eight rebounds and six steals while senior Alanna Johnston chipped in with 10 points, five boards and five steals.

Junior Alyssa Schimm had six points and three rebounds, senior Grace Cutting had four points and nine rebounds, junior Sydney VonGober had three points and three boards, senior Katie Stovall had three points and four rebounds while sophomore Annie Neles and sophomore Sofia Vitale had two points each.

“We look forward to getting back to practice and getting ready for Piner on Friday, which won’t be an easy game,” Thorpe said.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 13-5 overall record and a 5-0 Sonoma County League record.

Sonoma hosts Piner tonight, in Pfeiffer Gym. Freshmen at 4:30 p.m., JV at 6 and varsity at 7:30 p.m. Next Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Lady Dragons host Healdsburg.
