Lady Dragons start slow, but finish strong

Beat Petaluma to keep SCL record perfect|

The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon cagers got off to a slow start in the first quarter of Friday’s game against Petaluma.

But they snapped out of their first-quarter funk and outscored the Trojans 28-5 in the second and third quarters and coasted to a 44-22 win.

“After we talked at the end of the first quarter about picking of the defensive intensity, the girls really responded,” said Coach Jann Thorpe. “The team defensive pressure resulted in 20 steals for us.”

Sonoma outscored Petaluma 12-2 in the second quarter and 16-3 in the third.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as I would have liked, but we did a good job on the boards and outrebounded them 38-24,” Thorpe said.

Eight Lady Dragons scored. Senior Kayla Field led the Lady Dragon attack with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals. “Kayla shot the ball well,” Thorpe added.

Junior Amy Stanfield had six points and six rebounds, senior Alanna Johnston had six points and four rebounds, senior Katie Stovall had five points and five rebounds.

Senior Grace Cutting had four points and seven rebounds, junior Sydney VonGober had four points while senior Annika Ginter and sophomore Sofia Vitale each had two points.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 12-5 overall mark and a 4-0 SCL mark.

The Lady Dragons are playing a make-up game tonight, Tuesday, at El Molino. Sonoma hosts Piner on Friday.
