Lady Dragon cagers fourth in own tournament

The Lady Dragon cagers finished fourth in their own eight-team tournament over the weekend.

Sonoma started the weekend by beating Deer Valley 53-32 on Thursday, falling to Drake 56-41 on Friday and then to Montgomery, 36-33 on Saturday in the third-place game.

Miramonte won the tournament beating Analy 68-32 Thursday; beating Montgomery 74-30 on Friday night before disposing of Drake, 67-16 in the championship game.

Sturday, the Lady Dragons led Montgomery, 11-7 after the first quarter, but the Vikings held them to four points in the second quarter to take a 16-15 halftime lead. Sonoma tied it up in the third quarter but the Vikings outscored them by three in the fourth quarter for the win.

Friday against Drake, the Dragons kept it close through the first half of the first quarter, but Drake scored seven-straight points to take a 14-6 lead. A trey by senior Kayla Field cut the margin to 14-9, but Drake hit a trey and a free throw to stretch the margin to 18-9 at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Dragons tried to get out of the hole they were in, but couldn’t get any closer than nine points. It took a bucket with six second left in the quarter by Field to keep Sonoma within 10 at the half.

Field led the Lady Dragons with 17 points, senior Alanna Johnston had 13, junior Amy Stanfield had three and sophomore Annika Ginter, senior Shelby Decker, senior Katie Stovall and senior Grace Cutting each had two.
