Tam tramples Lady Dragon hoopsters

Hosting annual Dragon Classic Tournament this weekend|

Sonoma Lady Dragons’ basketball coach Jann Thorpe knew that Tuesday night’s game against Tamalpais would be a challenge. She was right.

The Lady Dragons trailed from the beginning and lost to the Red Tailed Hawks 60-29. Sonoma was 0-for-12 from the three-point line and shot 20 percent for the night. Although the Lady Dragons did out-rebound Tamalpais 46-37.

“They were definitely much better than we were,” said Thorpe. “They have some really good ball handlers and shooters.”

She mentioned that Jiana Harris was really skilled and dropped 24 points on the Lady Dragons.

Tam led 18-3 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 31-7 by halftime.

“We didn’t play well, so that didn’t help. We had too many turnovers, poor shooting and we weren’t tough enough on defense,” Thorpe said. “That’s why we were playing from behind the whole game.”

Tam stretched the lead to 34 points, 53-19 at the end of three quarters. Sonoma outscored Tam 10-7 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

“On a positive note, we made some adjustments in the second half, made some nice plays – and out-rebounded them,” the coach added.

The Lady Dragons were led by senior Grace Cutting’s eight points. Senior Alanna Johnston had seven – along with a team-leading 11 rebounds; junior Sydney Von Gober and sophomore Annie Neles had four, while junior Amy Stanfield, senior Shelby Decker and senior Anita Scheiblich each chipped in with two.

“We need to work hard and become better decision makers,” Thorpe said.

The loss drops Sonoma to 1-1 on the young season.
