Junior Amy Stanfield and freshman Auguste Andi each scored a pair of goals as the Lady Dragon soccer team Tuesday shutout the Healdsburg Greyhounds 7-0. It’s the ninth shutout for Sonoma this season.

The Lady Dragons got all seven goals in the first half including three in the first few minutes of the game.

Once the game was in hand, Coach Mike Verdu emptied his bench and started playing girls in different positions.

“We let the girls get some work at other positions,” Verdu said. “We held the seniors out most of the second half to let the younger girls get a ton of playing time.”

Verdu was pointing at Thursday night’s game against Analy, score not available at presstime.

Analy has the league title locked up, but if the Lady Dragons beat the Tigers, they’d finish a half-game back in second tied with Petaluma.

“We’ll finish in second place regardless,” he said. “That hasn’t happened in a number of years – not since I’ve been with the program, so we’re excited about that.”

Even though the team will finish second, Verdu said they’re not satisfied. “Our ultimate goal was to win the league,” he added.

Next up for the Lady Dragons is the North Coast Section tournament which starts next week. Sunday, the Lady Dragons will find out where they’re seeded, who they’re playing and where the game will be.

Verdu said he didn’t apply to host a game in the NCS because Arnold Field isn’t in very good condition at this time of year. “We’d rather travel to a decent field,” he said. “I can’t wait until we play in the winter next year.”

By next winter, the school district will have an all-weather artificial turf field in back of Adele Harrison Middle School.

The proposed field is going through the approval process with the Division of the State Architect. The district needs DSA approval before the project can be sent out for bids.
