Water polo earns split with San Marin

Boys, girls get ready for MCAL tournament|

The Sonoma Valley High water polo Dragons earned a split Thursday, as the girls beat San Marin 11-3, but the boys lost 19-9.

The girls jumped out to an early 5-1 lead by halftime – including a goal by goalie junior Molly Brown, and never looked back.

“The girls played so good,” said Coach Russ Jaycox. “Our defense was great, our shooting was high percentage … it was just an overall great game.”

Junior Abby Parr, who was the player of the game, had five goals, five assists and a steal; junior Grace Turner had five goals, two assists and three steals; Brown, junior Heather Durfee, junior Erica McIntosh and senior Balen Padilla each had an assist, while Brown also had 17 saves.

For the boys, Jaycox said the game was closer than the score would indicate.

“The third quarter killed us,” Jaycox said. “We had some miscues on defense, and San Marin had a handful of fast breaks. Limit those, and we’re tied at 9-9.”

“Senior Owen Summers put an exclamation mark on his season with seven goals an assist and four steals,” the coach added.

In addition to Summers, junior Dominic Tommasi had a goal, two assists and three steals; junior Dominic Biaggi had a goal; while sophomore Greg Kenton, sophomore Andrew Powers and junior Mario Coronado-Cartmell each had an assist and steal; and goalie Kenton had 15 saves.

“Our boys fought to the end and I’m proud of them,” Jaycox said.

The JV boys recorded a 24-13 win as five different players scored.

The water polo Dragons travel to Napa today to face Justin Siena in the final game of the season. The MCAL (Marin County Athletic League) playoffs start Thursday at Drake High School.
