Spikers tame Hounds

Face Healdsburg again tonight in opening of SCL tourney|

In their final tune-up before the Sonoma County League and North Coast Section tournaments start, the Sonoma Valley High spikers Thursday made quick work of the Healdsburg High Greyhounds.

The Lady Dragons won 25-15, 25-11 and 25-10.

But it was a bounce-back win as on Tuesday, Oct. 18, Sonoma dropped its first SCL match of the year to Analy, in five sets – 25-17, 25-22, 15-25, 18-25 and 13-15.

The Analy loss was moot as the Lady Dragons had already won their eighth straight SCL championship.

The Lady Dragons host Healdsburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the SCL tournament. Sonoma finished the season first while the Hounds were fourth. Second-seeded Petaluma hosts third-seed Analy on Tuesday also, with the winners of the two matches meeting on Thursday.

After putting the Hounds away in the first game, Sonoma didn’t let Healdsburg get any traction in either the second or the third games. The closest the Hounds got in the third game was 11-5.

And Sonoma was back at full strength as senior spiker Jenna Mak, who sat out a couple of games on a concussion protocol, played as did junior Emily Gonzalez who hurt her knee two matches ago.

“We played fantastic tonight,” said Coach Chelsea Scott. “All of our seniors got to play.”

It was senior night and the Lady Dragons honored their five seniors – Quinn Cordero, Shelby Decker, Kayla Field, Anna Stava and Mak.

“We played with plenty of energy,” Scott said. “We played great D (defense) and we served tough.”

She graded her team out at an “A-plus.”

“That’s what I like to see,” she said. “Especially coming back from a loss.”

Last Tuesday, after winning the first two games, the Lady Dragons proceeded to drop three straight games to Analy – at the Tigers’ gym.

“We played hard the first two games,” Scott said. “But then we got complacent. They got the momentum and we couldn’t get it back.”

The Lady Dragons tried to right the ship in the fifth game.

“We played better in the fifth game, but it was too little, too late,” Scott said.

She said Analy is a tough team to play because they have a lot of energy. And they’ve got a loud crowd in their home gym.

“It (the loss) came at a good time,” Scott said. “It’s a good warning lesson for us.”
