Lady Dragons spike Petaluma, Elsie

Spikers stay unbeaten in league play|

Even without senior hitter Jenna Mak, the Lady Dragon volleyball team continues its march through the Sonoma County League.

Mak has been sidelined for the past week with concussion symptoms after suffering a concussion while playing club volleyball this spring.

In a rare Wednesday game, the Lady Dragons beat Petaluma 3-0. The scores were identical - 25-19, 25-19 and 25-19.

On Tuesday, Sonoma beat Elsie Allen 25-14, 25-5 and 25-18, although the match wasn’t quite as close as the score might indicate. In the third set, Coach Chelsea Scott emptied the bench.

While the Lady Dragons haven’t been challenged much in the league - they’ve only lost two sets in eight league matches - Scott said the team has to focus on the mental aspect.

“We need to learn to battle back from adversity,” she said. “Playing a weaker schedule is mentally challenging.”

Against Elsie Allen, junior Emily Gonzalez had seven kills while senior Kayla Field, junior Gigi Girish and junior Kiana Janson all had six kills; junior Raegan Cordero had 16 assists while junior Emma Maggioncalda had eight; and Janson had eight digs, senior Quinn Cordero had seven and junior Isabel Eagles had six.

Against Piner on Sept. 29, the Lady Dragons won 25-13, 25-11 and 25-9, although Scott isn’t sure how that will count since Piner had only six players suited up and one was injured in the first set and didn’t return. “They played with five players in the last two sets,” she said. “That was our first match without Jenna.”

Again, Scott emptied her bench in the match.

Janson had 10 kills, Field had eight, Maggioncalda had six while Gonzalez and Girish had five each. Raegan Cordero had 24 assists while junior Emma Bartolome had 10. And junior Sydney Von Gober had 10 digs while Janson and junior Anna Stava had nine each.

The Lady Dragons are 8-0 in conference play. They have a bye on Tuesday and then host El Molino on Thursday, Oct. 13.
