Cross country Dragons open league

Sonoma Valley High senior Justin Cox finished 10th in the boys race while sophomore Malia Cashel was 15th in the girls race Saturday as the Dragon cross country team competed in the small schools division in the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay.

The girls finished fourth out of the nine scoring teams, while the boys were eighth out of 19 scoring teams. The top 25 finishers in each race received a medal.

After Malia Cashel, who ran the 2.33-mile course in 16 minutes 16 seconds; senior Maddie Cashel was 18th in 16:19; senior Grace Cutting was 28th in 16:51; junior Eliza Neeley was 29th in 16:53; junior Aliya Blinman was 31st in 16:54 and junior Trinity McGuinnes was 42nd in 18:07.

For the boys, Cox ran a 13:07; senior Leonardo Macedonio was 43rd in 13:53; senior Alex Epstein was 52nd in 14:05; freshman Kahlil Villias was 60th in 14:16; senior Brandon Barmore was 61st in 14:16 and junior Jeremy Mackling was 84th in 14:48.

Dragon assistant Coach Nick Spector also ran and won the coach’s race (1st overall) in 12:44. About 20 coaches competed.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Dragon cross country teams won the Ragle Relays. Sonoma was competing against Analy and Windsor.

Four-person teams competed in relay races with all-girl teams, all-boy teams and coed teams.

The Dragons took first and second in all of the categories accumulating 45 points to 9 for both Windsor and Analy.

Sonoma had three girls teams, which finished first, second and sixth; five boys teams which finished first, second, seventh, eighth and ninth; and five coed teams which finished first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh.

The Dragons open their Sonoma County League season Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they travel back to the Ragle Ranch in Sebastopol in a triangular meet with Analy and Piner.
