On a hot Tuesday afternoon, the tennis courts seemed even hotter with the competition between long-time SCL powerhouse Petaluma and the Sonoma Valley netters. Despite losing their first sets, both #1 Sydney Moore and #2 Isabel Hernandez came from behind to take the next two and claim victory, leading the Lady Dragons to a 6-1 victory over the Trojan team.

“I think the girls rose to the occasion and all of them worked really, really hard to get the win,” said a proud varsity head coach Mary Kate Dreyer. Of Moore’s and Hernandez’ clutch victories, Dreyer said, “It is very hard to do that, but they both dug deep within themselves and got the win.”

Complete scores showed singles #1 Sydney Moore over Petaluma’s Grace Davis 2-6, 6-3, 7-5; Number 2 singles Isabel Hernandez defeated Ericka Gilmore 6-7(4-7), 6-2, 6-3; number three singles Anita Scheiblich swept Alasia Barone of Petaluma, 6-2, 6-3. Only in number four singles did Petaluma’s Christina Lana defeat Audrey Castillo 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action the Dragons scored a sweep: number one teammates Sarah Kiser/Acacia Schow over Mary Manzane/Brooke Symores 7-5, 6-2; number two doubles Christina Golubovich/Lizza Moore defeated Diana Trueblood/Vivian Allen 6-3, 6-0; and number three duo Hannah Chun/Olivia Weisiger trumped Jordan Zavone/Sierra Mancuso 6-1, 6-1.

The previous Thursday, Sept. 20, the Sonoma Valley girls tennis team won at home, taking the match 5-2 against Piner. In singles #1, Piner’s Christine Hyunh fell to Syndey Moore 4-6, 6-1, 7-5; in #2 singles, Isabel Hernandez defeated Wendy Tran of Piner 7-5, 6-2; singles #3, Anita Scheiblich went down to Piner’s Tracy Nguyen 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; and number four Sonoma player Audrey Castillo bested Jasmine Alvanez 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0.

Doubles play found Sonoma’s Sarah Kiser/Acacia Schow over Cecilia Guzman/Maria Guzman 6-0, 6-1; Piner’s Jennifer Le/Amy Tang defeated Eden Scheiblich/Nikki Sandu 6-0, 6-1; and in number three doubles Sonoma’s Hannah Chunn/Olivia Weisiger took Shania Hamid/Lindsey Toh-Espens of Piner, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.

The two recent victories give Sonoma Valley a league record of 4-0; overall they are 4-1.

“This is the first time in 10 years that Sonoma has beaten Petaluma,” said Dreyer. “Now on to Analy this Thursday.” Results of that game, held in Sebastopol, are not available at press time. The team’s next home match isn’t until Thursday, Oct.6, against El Molino.
