Soccer girls, spikers both win

Stanfield, Hedley each score twice in soccer win over Rancho Cotate|

After two close losses to open the season, the Lady Dragon soccer team got their first win Thursday, shutting out Rancho Cotate, 4-0.

Juniors Amy Stanfield and Jensen Hedley each scored two goals to power the Lady Dragons.

It was a complete team effort, said Coach Mike Verdu.

“I was most pleased by our physical play and our shut-down defense led by reigning SCL defensive player of the year Hanna Maillard, and fellow seniors Katie Stovall and Hayden Pearce and freshman sensation Shauna Johnston,” he said. “All three parts of the field were connected and dominant. We’re starting to find our identity and groove, and we have a huge test at home Tuesday (today) against Casa.”

Casa Grande comes to Sonoma sporting a 3-1 record including wins against Analy and Petaluma.

The win over Rancho Cotate gives the Lady Dragons a 1-2 overall record. Their game against Casa is slated at 4:30 p.m. at the high school field.
