Dragon gridders open season today

The Sonoma Valley High football Dragons will open their 2016 season this afternoon, Friday, Aug. 26, at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley. Game time is 4 p.m. The game was originally set for Saturday, but was moved to today.

The Dragons, who scrimmaged Santa Rosa High last Friday, look to start the season on a winning note. Sonoma lost its first seven games last year before winning the last three to finish with a 3-7 season. Today, they’ll be facing a Tamalpais team that was also 3-7 last year.

Sonoma has only nine games scheduled this year. After today’s opener, the Dragons have a bye the second week Sept. 2, before hosting their home opener on Sept. 9 against El Camino High from South San Francisco.

Longtime former foe Montgomery pays the Dragons a visit on Sept. 16.

Sonoma opens its Sonoma County League schedule on Sept. 23, when they hit the road to Elsie Allen. Petaluma comes to town on Sept. 30 and the Dragons visit Analy the following Friday, Oct. 7.

Sonoma has another bye week on Oct. 14. The following weekend is homecoming, and the Dragons foe will be Piner. After a trip to Healdsburg on Oct. 28, the Dragons end their season with a home game against El Molino on Nov. 4.

Game time for all but the Tamalpais game is 7:30 p.m. with the junior varsity starting at 5.

The Dragon volleyball team opens its season tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 27, with a match in Pfeiffer Gym against Vintage High. The freshmen start at 9:30 a.m., the JV at 10:30 and the varsity takes the floor at 11:30.

The Lady Dragon spikers have two games next week, Wednesday, Aug. 31, when Montgomery visits Sonoma, game time 6:30 p.m., and then the Lady Dragons visit Casa the next night, Thursday, Sept. 1.

The girls’ soccer team lost their opening match 2-0 Tuesday to Santa Rosa High. Sonoma opened its home schedule Thursday, results not available by press time.

The girls’ tennis squad opened their season Thursday at Casa, results not available at press time. The squad opens league play on Thursday, Sept. 1, when Elsie Allen comes to town. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

The cross country team opens its season on Wednesday, Sept. 7, with the annual Alumni Meet at Maxwell Park. The thinclads first meet is the Lowell Invitational in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 10.
