The Pittsburg Diamonds, a member of the same league as the Sonoma Stompers, the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, have agreed to terms with free agent outfielder Jose Canseco. The former American League MVP returns to the league where he played two games last year with the Stompers, though he did not pursue a long-term contract.

“We are excited to have Jose Canseco on the team, he will not only bring power and excitement to the ballpark, but will also be able to coach some of our players,” said Khurram Shah, majority owner of the Pittsburg Diamonds. “He has an incredible knowledge about hitting and playing the game at a high level.”

Jose Canseco was the American League Rookie of the Year, hitting 33 home runs while knocking in 117 RBI's. He was the first player in MLB to go “40-40” as he hit 42 home runs while stealing 40 bases, leading to the American League Most Valuable Player award. He finished his impressive major league career with 462 career home runs, 1407 RBI's, and a career .868 OPS.

His first game is scheduled to be Thursday, Aug. 4, when he will be on the roster for the match-up against his former Stompers teammates. After that the 51-year old pro will be keeping busy: there will be a morning golf tournament followed by an afternoon home-run derby scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5, and he is set to be the starting pitcher on Sunday, again against the Stompers.
