Softball, baseball Dragons both win SCL tournament titles

Girls come from 5-0 deficit; boys use 8-run inning|

It was a double win Thursday as the Sonoma Valley High softball and baseball teams both won their respective Sonoma County League tournaments.

The Lady Dragons started things off Thursday afternoon squeaking by Petaluma, 10-9, after losing a pair to the Trojans during the regular season.

A few hours later, the Dragon baseball team matched the Lady Dragons tournament title with one of their own after beating Analy 12-5 in their championship contest. The tigers too had beaten the Dragons twice in the regular season and were sitting on top of the SCL.

The Lady Dragons spotted Petaluma a 5-0 lead before they got going and tied the game at 5 in the top of the fifth inning. But the tie didn’t last long as Petaluma came back and put two runs on the board in their half of the fifth to regain the lead at 7-5.

Sonoma added a run in the top of the sixth, but Petaluma added one in their half of the sixth to maintain a two-run lead at 8-6.

The Lady Dragons didn’t give up and put up four runs in the top of the seventh, including one that scored on a suicide-squeeze by Bella Fanucchi, to take their first lead of the game at 10-8. Petaluma wasn’t going down without a fight and they pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh, but the tying run was thrown out at third base in a close call to end the contest, 10-9.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 17-9 overall record.

An hour after the girls celebrated, the boys started their game with Analy, a team that had beaten the Dragons 6-2 and 6-1 in the regular season.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning using a base hit and three walks to take a 1-0 lead.

But the Dragons put up one of their biggest innings of the year in the top of the third when they pushed eight runs across using two walks, three doubles and four Analy errors to take an 8-1 lead.

Analy started chipping away pushing across two in their half of the third, another in the fourth and yet another in the fifth to narrow the gap to 8-5.

The Dragons put the game away in the top of the seventh when they scored four more times to take a more comfortable 12-5 lead, which is how the game ended.

“That was fun,” said Coach Don Lyons.

The win gives the Dragons a 14-12 overall record.

Both teams will have to wait until Sunday to see who they’ll face and where in the North Coast Section tournament next week.
