It’s been a very busy month or so for local golfers, with the Sonoma Men’s Golf Association, Sonoma Valley Golf Club and the Kelly Tour all in action.

St. Patrick’s Day actually saw the Kelly Tour “40” travel to Monterey for their annual bash. This year saw the group play the Del Monte Golf Course, one of the older courses in the Monterey area, and host to the PGA Tour Champions annually.

After the dust settled, and a few beverages were consumed, the winners were announced. Sixty-six was a popular number, with two teams shooting that score, so a card-off had to be enacted to decide second and third place; as it turned out, the group of Howie Kulken, Dave Bagley, Bob Tiernan had to settle for third, while Milt Wallace, Dean Tucker, John McMahon and Dennis McMahon claimed second. With a score of 65, first place went to Bob Greenslade, Colman Rafferty, Martin Barnsley and Myron Reece.

John McMahon kept the winning going by claiming the men’s long drive as well, while Winnie Lanning took home the women’s. In closest to the pin, Colm Elders claimed the men’s and Kathy Barnett grabbed the women’s.

The men and women who traveled to the Monterey Peninsula were rewarded with fantastic weather in the 70s which gave many of them the chance to head out and play Pacific Grove Golf Links a day after the tournament.

The Sonoma Valley Golf Club got their traveling shoes on and headed over to Silverado’s North Course for their first away tournament of the year.

Leading the way in the 1st Flight was the team of Dick Kingsbury, Dennis Kenney, Jeff Hjort and Terry McBroom who carded a combined score of 126. Second place went to Kevin Austin, Mike Buckley, Buz Buckley and Tim Connolly with a 128 total. Five shots behind in third was Leon Valle, Jun Jasareno, Mac Bautista and John Stewart with a 133, while Pavel Janosko, Don Steffe, Steve Stimel and Sam Sandoval had to settle for fourth after a tie-breaker at the 133 total. Rounding out the top five were Dick Moore, Bob Leal, Jim Honeywell and Leo McCloskey, all with a score of 133.

The 2nd Flight saw a very impressive round by the group of Jack Powers, Bill Powers, John Fanucchi and Mike Fanucchi who ran away with the top spot with a very impressive score of 119. Eight shots back in second place was Bob Nadell, Ron Luddy, Tom Reynolds and Kit Wood with a 127 total while a score of 129 gave Ron Macaluso, Roger Sloss, Herb Seidell and Ralph Giancaspro third place. Fourth went to Bob Jaeger, John Long, Dave Voepel and Harry Tistle with 132 and Ernie Loveless, Gary Matto, Tom Osipowich and John Shepherd completing the top-five with a 135 total.

The Sonoma Men’s Golf Association traveled to picturesque Pope Valley and the Aetna Springs Golf Course for their April event. Leading the way in the two-man format was the team of John Bogardus and Don Roesh, who carded an impressive score of 61. Nick Blonder and Ian Tervet grabbed second, one-shot back with a 62, beating out Al Rappoport and Ron Sharek in a card-off. Woody Von Lackum and Mike Lucas had a 63 which gave them fourth, while Woody Frink and Myron Donesky’s 65 was good enough for fifth place. Representing the club at the next stage of the NCGA Associate Club Fourball Net Championship will be the team of Blonder and Tervet.

The club returns to action at Silverado’s North Course on Saturday, April 30.
