On the heels of falling two points short in their attempt to upset one of the Sonoma County League frontrunners, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys didn’t waste time dwelling on the frustrating loss and quickly got down to the business of putting together a solid, fruitful bounce-back game.

From the opening tipoff of Friday night’s SCL clash at Pfeiffer Gym, the young Dragons, dominating both ends of the court, dashed to a 17-6 first-quarter lead en route to building an imposing 32-10 halftime advantage over El Molino.

While the offense sputtered in the second half and tallied only 11 third- and fourth-quarter points, the defense remained stalwart yielding just 16 points as Sonoma wrapped up a decisive 43-26 victory over the visiting Lions.

“Great bounce-back win. The boys came out with super energy and focus,” said Sonoma head coach Mike Boles. “We defended at a high level, made shots, and played tough basketball. We’ve strung together some good, consistent efforts.”

Leading Sonoma were junior Colton Mertens’ 15 points, and senior Edwin Reyes and junior Luke Severson’s eight each.

The Dragon boys will host longtime SCL rival Healdsburg in their 7:30 p.m. home finale at Pfeiffer Gym tomorrow night, Wednesday, Feb. 10. Before the tipoff they will honor their two lone seniors, Reyes and Joe Petersen, and their parents.

Sonoma ends their SCL season facing Piner in Santa Rosa Friday evening, Feb. 12.
