Following up impressive victories over Sonoma County League rival Analy and Marin County Athletic League leader Tamalpais, the Lady Dragons rode into Forestville Tuesday night and overwhelmed El Molino in a 70-30 rout.

With their offense finally clicking in a consistent rhythm while their defense performed at a steady and stingy clip, the defending champion Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls turned in a dominating effort to post their seventh straight SCL victory, and eighth overall.

Leading the visiting Sonoma girls past the Lady Lions with double-double outings were reigning SCL most valuable player senior Jenny Eggers’ game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, and senior all-leaguer Renee O’Donnell’s 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with one blocked shot.

Sonoma also scored with senior Emma Stanfield’s 12 points, four rebounds and one block; sophomore Amy Stanfield’s six points, four assists and three rebounds; junior Kayla Field’s six points; junior Grace Cutting’s four points and six rebounds; senior Annie Greenslade’s four points and three rebounds; senior Heidi Landeros’ three points, game-high six assists and three rebounds; and junior Katie Stovall’s two points and seven rebounds.

Head coach Sil Coccia acknowledged the Dragons were playing an “over-matched and undersized” El Molino squad, but he expressed admiration at how his own team performed.

“The girls demonstrated focus and purpose, and turned in four solid quarters in reaching our highest point total of the season,” said Coccia.

Coccia noted the team’s strong statistics: 16 assists and only seven turnovers, shooting at 57 percent from the floor, and 59 of 70 points scored on field goals.

“This was our only game of the week and we go into a needed rest period with a lot of confidence,” said the coach.

Next week the Lady Dragons enter a three-game gauntlet that will determine the league champion. Senior forward Sami Von Gober will return to the lineup from injury, which should help bolster the team’s momentum.

The Lady Dragons have two games left in their current three-game SCL road trip, facing longtime rival in Petaluma on Tuesday, Feb. 9, followed the next night with a key league clash at Healdsburg, before they host Piner in both home and league finale on Friday, Feb. 12, in Pfeiffer Gym.
