Sonoma’s varsity basketball team drops the ball

Last week’s two-game Sonoma County League road trip ended the same way it began for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys, on the short end of the score card.

After losing 48-37 to defending champion Elsie Allen on Wednesday, Jan. 27, the Dragons traveled to Sebastopol on Friday night for their second showdown with current SCL first-place Analy, but from the opening tip they found themselves in a constant struggle not to be overwhelmed.

Ultimately the Dragons couldn’t slow down, let alone stop, the Tigers, who powered their way to a 66-34 win.

“We ran into a team that hit on all cylinders. Give our opponent credit. They made shots and defended at a high level,” said Sonoma head coach Mike Boles. “We competed, we just didn’t execute on either end of the floor.”

Pacing Sonoma, which had no one in score in double figures, were junior Nazir Lyle and sophomore Dylan Samaniego’s eight points each, junior Luke Severson’s seven and sophomore Max Gustafson’s six.

The young Dragon boys, who faced visiting longtime league rival Petaluma at home last night (results not available at presstime) next host SCL foe El Molino at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, in Pfeiffer Gym.
