Sonoma hoopers pilfered by Prospectors in overtime

The SVHS varsity basketball team lost a close one in overtime to SCL league rival Piner|

For the second time in the first half of the 12-game Sonoma County League season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys were handed a heartbreaking overtime loss to one of the top SCL teams.

Playing always-tough Piner last Thursday in their home Pfeiffer Gym, the Dragons were forced by another slow start to battle uphill until they were able to forge a tie and force overtime, just as they had against perennial power Analy in the second game of the campaign.

Down 22-14 at the half, the Dragons regrouped and outscored the Prospectors 33-25 in the second half to force the OT. Again with another chance to pull off an SCL overtime upset win, Sonoma couldn’t sustain the drive it took to pull even, and the visiting Prospectors prevailed to head back to Santa Rosa with a 59-55 victory.

“Tough, heartbreaking loss. The boys fought hard to get back into game and force overtime,” said Sonoma head coach Mike Boles.

“We continue to grow and areso close – we just need to tighten up a few things, with three days of practice before the second half of league gives us that opportunity.”

Pacing Sonoma were junior Luke Severson and sophomore Max Gustafson’s 17 points each, and sophomore Dylan Samaniego’s 10.

The Dragons (2-4 SCL record, 7-13 overall) begin the second round of SCL rematch games on the road starting tomorrow night, Wednesday, Jan. 27, at defending champion Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa, and on Friday, Jan. 29, against longtime league rival Analy in Sebastopol.
