Sonoma boys ?stumble at ?Jefferson

Sonoma varsity basketballers drop the ball|

Traveling south of San Francisco to Daly City on Tuesday evening to face a tough nonleague opponent, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys got off to an upbeat offensive start and forged a positive 16-16 first-quarter tie with Jefferson.

But while the Dragons picked up where they ended the first quarter and turned in another 16-point effort in the second quarter, the quick and physical Jefferson team kicked it into a higher gear and posted a 25-point second period, followed by 21-14 and 17-9 third and fourth quarters en route to a 79-55 win.

After his all-tourney efforts in leading Sonoma to a third-place finish at the recent Stokes Tournament in Kelseyville, sophomore Max Gustafson stepped up big in the loss by scoring a game-high 26 points, while junior teammate Luke Severson tallied 12 points.

Continuing the nonleague portion of their 2015-16 season, the Dragons, who played visiting San Rafael last night – results not available at presstime – host both Middletown at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 12, and Terra Linda at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18.
