Lady Dragons cager season starts tonight

High school girls basketball team ready to repeat|

Ready to launch the 2015-16 season with a deep, experienced, senior-laden squad, the defending Sonoma County League champion Sonoma Valley High School varsity girls basketball team hit the road for Marin to open the non-league portion of its new campaign, before returning home for some tournament action.

The Lady Dragons play at San Rafael tonight before hosting their longtime, and popular, Dragon Classic at Pfeiffer Gym, with the eight-team tourney starting Thursday, Dec. 3, and running through Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5.

In Thursday’s tournament opening games, San Marin versus Maria Carrillo at 4; Northgate versus Montgomery at 5:30; Menlo Atherton versus Analy at 7; and Sonoma hosting Drake at 8:30 p.m.

Following the classic, the Lady Dragons host Napa at 7 p.m., in Pfeiffer Gym on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and hit the road for a long trip and don’t return home until Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, when they host Terra Nova at 4:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, the Lady Dragons begin defense of their SCL title by tipping off their league campaign on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa.

Comprising the defending SCL champion Lady Dragons – again directed by head coach Sil Coccia, who’s assisted by Dino Minatta and Mark Burningham – are seniors Eggers, Bella Bollman, Annie Greenslade, Heidi Landeros, Renee O’Donnell, Rocky Darnell, Emma Stanfield and Sami Von Gober; juniors Grace Cutting, Kayla Field and Katie Stovall; and sophomore Amy Stanfield.
