Determined Lady Dragons tip off

Defending SCL champs open season in San Rafael|

Last year the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls were young, unknown and untested at the start of the season, but they were also talented, determined and defensive minded, allowing their offense to gain confidence and productivity, which led to capturing the Sonoma County League title.

This year, the defending SCL-champion Lady Dragons are experienced, known and battle-tested as they start the season still talented and defensive-minded, but deeper with 10 returners, four being starters, including high-scoring league co-MVP Jenny Eggers.

Sonoma’s 2015-16 hoops girls are also determined to repeat as SCL champions and began paving the way for a back-to-back title run with a tough preseason schedule that started with Tuesday night’s annual Foundation Game benefitting student scholarship programs.

In the Foundation Game with visiting Montgomery, where the Lady Dragons beat the Vikings 43-39, counting toward their overall record, the Lady Dragons – who played their annual Alumni Game on Wednesday – officially tip off the nonleague portion of their schedule at San Rafael on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The Sonoma cagers will then host their annual Dragon Classic, with the eight-team tournament running from Thursday, Dec. 3, through Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5.

Comprising the defending SCL champion Lady Dragons – again directed by head coach Sil Coccia, who’s assisted by Dino Minatta and Mark Burningham – are seniors Eggers, Bella Bollman, Annie Greenslade, Heidi Landeros, Renee O’Donnell, Rocky Darnell, Emma Stanfield and Sami Von Gober; juniors Grace Cutting, Kayla Field and Katie Stovall; and sophomore Amy Stanfield.
