Sonoma girls finally top Petaluma

SCL 1st-place ?Dragon soccer ?boys hit road, girls host Thursday|

It was a long time coming, and it came at an opportune moment for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer girls as they battle to stay in the Sonoma County League title hunt.

For the first time in 15 attempts spanning more than a half decade, the Lady Dragons own a victory over longtime rival Petaluma, which, along with defending champion Analy, are the perennial SCL powers.

Hosting the Trojans, who won the first meeting between the two foes at home, the Sonoma girls turned in another standout defensive effort behind their sophomore goalie duo of Ellie Bon and Lyndsey Lee last Thursday at the high school field.

After senior Bridget Vanoni scored a first-half goal off an assist by sophomore Jensen Hedley, the Lady Dragons smothered Petaluma’s offense en route to posting a thrilling 1-0 shutout triumph.

Sonoma’s girls play league foe Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa today, before hosting Piner in an SCL match at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the high school field.

The SCL first-place Dragon soccer boys will attempt to shake off last week’s first loss of the season to defending champion Petaluma, splitting the season series, on the road in Santa Rosa this week with league matches against tough teams Elsie Allen tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Piner on Friday, Oct. 16.
