Unbeaten no more, Dragon boys edged by Petaluma

Sonoma atop SCL soccer standings|

Hoping to add to the momentum they built over the first half of the Sonoma County League 12-match season which saw them go unbeaten in six straight matches to sit atop the SCL standings, the Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity soccer boys traveled to Petaluma on Monday for a rematch with the defending champion.

After opening the SCL season with a stunning, but convincing, victory over a Petaluma team that won both the league and North Coast Section Division-3 titles last year, the Dragons reeled off five more wins to take a 6-0 first-place league record into the clash with their longtime rival which has lost twice this year.

In the closely contested showdown at Durst Field, the visitors from Sonoma continued to display its attacking offense that created constant scoring opportunities and tallied two goals, but unfortunately, also missed plenty of shots on goal, and the Trojans took advantage and struck thrice for a 3-2 win, upping their record to 5-2.

Scoring a goal each for the SCL front-running Dragons (6-1) were senior Edwin Reyes and junior Ezekiel Hermosillo, with junior Diego Larios adding an assist.

With a bye on Wednesday, the Sonoma boys next travel to Santa Rosa for a pair of league matches against Elsie Allen on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and at Piner on Friday, Oct. 16.

The varsity soccer Lady Dragons, who hosted longtime rival Petaluma yesterday – results not available at presstime – will face SCL foe Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Oct. 13, before hosting Piner in a 4 p.m. league match on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the high school field.
