After opening the Sonoma County League season with a loss, the young Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls quickly got into sync and have soundly defeated, in sweeping fashion, four straight SCL foes, including longtime rivals El Molino and Analy, followed by Healdsburg last week and Piner earlier this week.

In hosting Healdsburg on Thursday, Oct. 1, the Lady Dragons cruised to a 25-14 first-set win, but then found themselves in a second-set battle in which they prevailed 31-29, and followed with a 25-18 third-set decision for the match victory.

Leading Sonoma past the Greyhound girls were senior setter Courtney Cogbill and sophomore setter Layla Schoeningh’s 13 assists each; junior Kiara Miles’ 12 kills and seven digs; junior Jenna Mak’s 12 kills and six digs; senior Sami Von Gober’s eight digs; and sophomore setter Reagan Cordero’s five assists.

On Tuesday in Santa Rosa, the Lady Dragons were engaged in a closely-played first set with Piner that they finally won 25-23, and then stepped up and dominated the action for a 25-14 first-set victory and 25-6 third-set rout for the match triumph.

Sonoma was led in its three-set sweep of the Prospector girls by Cogbill’s nine assists; Cordero’s eight assists; Schoeningh’s six kills; senior Carlie Vollert’s four kills; and junior Kayla Field and sophomore Gigi Girish’s three kills apiece.

The defending champion and first-place Lady Dragon spikers (4-1 SCL record), who played at Elsie Allen last night – results not available at presstime – will be seeking some league payback when they host longtime rival Petaluma at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Pfeiffer Gym.
