Sonoma soccer boys, girls eclipse El Mo

Dragon boys unbeaten, girls host Petaluma on Thursday|

It’s been both a challenging and uplifting ride through the first round of the Sonoma County League’s 12-match season for Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity soccer boys, who started the 2015 campaign posting a stunning, but convincing, upset of defending SCL champion Petaluma and just kept on winning.

In Forestville on Friday, the Dragons put their 5-0 league record on the line and were put to the test by El Molino, with both teams playing strong defense and the match ending in a scoreless tie.

Finally, visiting Sonoma’s offense broke through and erupted past the Lions for four goals in two overtime periods and a hard-fought 4-1 triumph and sit alone atop of the standings with a perfect 6-0 SCL record.

Leading the first-place Dragons past El Molino were senior Edwin Reyes and junior Beto Nápoles’ one goal and one assist each, and juniors Diego Larios and Beto Zaragoza’s one goal apiece.

The front-running Dragons played a league rematch on the road with defending champion Petaluma yesterday, with the results not available at presstime.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls, who are hitting their stride with their defense staying strong and their offense finally clicking, followed their 8-1 shellacking of SCL foe Healdsburg last Tuesday with another dominating team effort in blanking visiting El Molino 2-0 at the high school field on Thursday.

Both sophomores Ellie Bon and Lyndsey Lee again combined with their defenders for the shutout and the Lady Dragons were also led by senior Brianda Prudente and sophomore Amy Stanfield’s one goal each, and sophomore Jensen Hedley’s one assist.

The Lady Dragons have a bye today and will be looking for payback when they host longtime SCL rival Petaluma, which beat them in the season opener, in a crucial rematch at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the high school field.
