Sonoma’s Lady Dragons defeat Sebastopol volleyball rival

Girls' tennis, golf squads lose to rivals|

In Sonoma County League action on Tuesday, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity girls volleyball team turned is a strong road performance to beat a longtime rival, but the girls tennis and golf teams both came up on the wrong end of their match results.

Four-time defending SCL volleyball champion Lady Dragons traveled to Sebastopol for a showdown with longtime rival Analy High, and while cruising to a first-set victory, they had to battle to pull out two close-set wins for a sweeping 3-0 triumph.

Sonoma topped the Tiger girls 25-18 in the first set and then nipped them twice in overtime, winning by 29-27 and 26-24 margins in the second and third sets, respectively. Leading the Lady Dragons were Jenna Mak’s 17 digs and 13 kills; sophomore Layla Schoeningh’s 16 assists; junior Kiara Miles’ 15 kills and 13 digs; senior Carlie Vollert’s 15 digs and three kills; sophomore Reagan Cordero’s 12 assists; senior Courtney Cogbill’s seven assists; senior Sami Von Gober’s five digs; and junior Kayla Field’s three kills.

In their three-set 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of longtime SCL rival El Molino last week in Pfeiffer Gym, the Sonoma girl spikers were led by Schoeningh’s 18 assists and 11 digs; Mak’s 17 digs and 14 kills; Miles’ 15 digs and eight kills; Cogbill’s 11 assists; Von Gober’s 10 digs; Vollert’s seven kills; sophomore Gabriella Girish’s seven digs; and Field’s three kills.

After breezing through their first three league matches, the Sonoma tennis girls had their victory ride momentarily derailed when they were swept in singles play, leading to a narrow 4-3 home-opening SCL loss to Petaluma Tuesday afternoon at the high school courts.

The Lady Dragons swept all three doubles matches led by seniors Alison Gray and Sonia Krikorian’s 6-0, 6-2 over Aloisa Barone and Tess Barend at No. 1 doubles; juniors Isabel Hernandez and Kasey Richards’ 6-1, 6-0 over Ericka Gilmore and Christina Lang at No. 2 doubles; and seniors Olivia Yazzolino and Malaya Zachau’s 6-1, 6-3 over Annis O’Neill and Diana Trueblood at No. 3 doubles.

Sustaining Sonoma’s losses were senior Emma Stanfield’s 2-6, 1-6 to league standout Kim Garcia at No. 1 singles; senior Brenda Maldonado’s 4-6, 4-6 to Grace Slembrouk at No. 2 singles; junior Sydney Moore’s 1-6, 2-6 to Grace Davis at No. 3 singles; and senior Hannah Adams’ 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 to Kelly D’ambrocia at No. 4 singles.

The Lady Dragon netters, who faced another longtime SCL rival, Analy, yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host league foe El Molino at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, on the high school courts.

Sonoma’s girl golfers traveled over the Valley hills west to the Rooster Run Golf Course on Tuesday and ran into a good Petaluma team that played a strong nine holes en route to a 274-322 win.

Pacing the visiting Lady Dragons were senior Callie Hogan’s 57; sophomore Hannah Ladouceur’s 63; sophomore Candice Silkey’s 65; senior Jacquline Regan’s 67; and freshman Samantha Pencil’s 70.

The Sonoma girls next host El Molino at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Sonoma Golf Club.
