Soccer Dragons rout Tigers, now 4-0

Lady Dragons fight Analy girls to 0-0 tie|

It’s been home sweet home to open the Sonoma County League season for the high-flying Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys, who just hosted four tough SCL foes and have looked impressive in winning four straight matches.

After shocking defending champion Petaluma with a rousing 5-3 victory in the season opener, and following with one-goal wins over Elsie Allen and Piner, the Dragons hosted perennial power Analy at the SVHS field on Friday and in stunning fashion dominated their longtime rival for a rare one-sided 5-0 triumph.

Leading unbeaten first-place Sonoma (4-0 record) to the total-team win were junior Freddy Ramírez’s one goal and one assist; one goal apiece by seniors Eduardo Hernandez and Teo Magaña, and juniors Diego Larios and Beto Nápoles; junior Juan Zaragoza’s two assists; and senior Edwin Reyes and junior Nico Sloop’s one assist each.

The Dragon soccer boys, managed by longtime head coach Pedro Merino and assistant coach Mike Linder, now hit the road for a long five-match challenge starting with tomorrow night’s, Wednesday, Sept. 30, top-of-the-SCL standings showdown at Healdsburg, followed by a clash at El Molino on Friday, Oct. 2.

In the wake of their heartbreaking 1-0 league loss to Piner last Tuesday in Santa Rosa, Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls made, in the words of their head coach Mike Verdu, “A complete 180 from the Piner match,” in their battle with visiting defending SCL champion Analy on Thursday at the high school field.

The Lady Dragons turned in an outstanding team defensive performance in support of sophomore goal-keeper Ellie Bon and, while they couldn’t muster-up a goal, they could deny high-scoring Analy a goal, which they did in shutting down, and out, one of their longtime SCL rivals for a scoreless tie.

For the match, Analy was the designated home team as the Tigers are on the road for all of their games as their Sebastopol field is being renovated.

The Sonoma girls will host both league rival Healdsburg at 7 p.m. tonight at Arnold Field, and SCL foe El Molino at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the high school field.
