In challenging Sonoma County League season openers, both the Sonoma Valley High School varsity boys and girls soccer teams battled longtime rival Petaluma and turned in impressive efforts that resulted in split results.

The Sonoma boys hosted the defending SCL and North Coast Section Division-3 champion Petaluma in their league opener at the high school field, playing with confidence and calm as they pulled off a stunning double-overtime 5-3 upset victory.

Leading the triumphant Dragons past the Trojans were senior Edwin Reyes’ two goals; junior Alfredo Ram’rez-Garci‡’s one goal and three assists; senior Eduardo Hernandez and junior Roberto N‡poles’ one goal each; and junior Diego Larios’ one assist.

The Sonoma boys, directed by longtime head coach Pedro Merino and assistant coach Mike Linder, host SCL foe Elsie Allen at 4 p.m. today on the high school field.

Sonoma’s varsity girls hit the SCL road for last Tuesday’s league opener and, trailing a solid Petaluma squad by a goal at the half, dominated most of the second-half play by keeping the Trojan girls from scoring again.

Despite their standout defensive play supporting sophomore goalie Ellie Bon in the second half, the Lady Dragons, unfortunately, also couldn’t find the any part of the net and ended up being nipped by a 2-1 final score.

Tallying Sonoma’s lone goal was senior Mia Vanoni off an assist by sophomore Amy Stanfield.

The Lady Dragons, directed by head coach Mike Verdu, hosted Elsie Allen yesterday Ð results not available at presstime Ð and travel to Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to play league foe Piner before facing strong defending SCL champion Analy at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the high school field.

Analy will be the designated home team for the league showdown as the Tigers are on the road for all of their games while the Sebastopol field is being renovated.
