Dragon gridders open with Fremont

Non-league match-up begins SVHS grid season|

Tonight begins another season under the lights at Arnold Field for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity football team, as the Dragons begin their 2015 season with a home matchup against Fremont High School of Oakland.

The two teams faced off in non-league action last season at Arnold Field with the visiting Tigers shutting out Sonoma 20-0.

Sonoma, who was 3-7 last year under returning head coach Bob Midgely, will have a new influx of talent from last year’s junior varsity squad to this year’s team that features only nine returning seniors.

Many of those returners will be featured players on offense, with Max Yankovic running the spread option at quarterback and Will Lennon one of his favorite targets at wide receiver. Both players will also be featured in the defensive backfield at cornerback and safety, respectively.

Visiting Fremont went 8-4 last year and 4-1 in the Oakland Athletic League, losing only to league champion McClymonds in action with their league rivals, including a 17-8 defeat in the OAL championship game against McClymonds. Sonoma faced McClymonds last season as well, falling 55-0 in a non-league game.

Sonoma’s non-league schedule features two home games, with the Dragons going on the road next week to Berkeley and the week after to San Marin. The team’s non-league run ends at home on Sept. 18 against Chico.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with the junior varsity squad hosting its season opener at 5 p.m.
