Horse racing starts at County Fair

Horse racing at the Sonoma County Fair begins Thursday, July 30, and concludes with a bonus session Aug. 14-16.

The dates are July 30 – Aug. 2; Aug. 6 – 9; and Aug. 14-16.

The Wine Country horse races take place on both dirt and turf race surfaces Thursdays through Sundays (no racing on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays), with the daily post time for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday set for 1:15 p.m., while the Friday post time is 3:15 p.m.

This year’s highlighted stakes races include the Wine Country Stakes for 3-year-old fillies (1-1/16 miles, turf) on Saturday, Aug. 1; the Luther Burbank Handicap (1-1/16 miles, turf) for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up Sunday, Aug. 2; the Robert Dupret Derby (1-1/16 miles, turf) for 3-year-olds on Saturday, Aug. 8; the Joseph Grace Handicap (1-1/16 miles, turf) for 3-year-old and up on Sunday, Aug. 9; the Wine Country Debutante on Friday, Aug. 14, (six furlongs) for 2-year-old fillies; the Jess Jackson Owner’s Handicap (five furlongs) for 3-year-olds and up on Saturday, Aug. 15; and the Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes (six furlongs) for 2-year-olds on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Horse-racing seminars are held in Shade Park (next to the fairgrounds track) preceding each race-day, at 1:30 p.m. for 3:15 post times on Friday, and at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday when post time is 1:15 p.m.

Admission to the lower level is free with fair admission; upper reserved grandstand seats are $3 a person. Race tickets can be purchased in advance online at sonomacountyfair.com, or at the grandstand ticket box office.
