Sonoma starts NCS with 21 qualifiers

SCL event champs Garon, Miles, Stanfield lead Dragons into Saturday area meet at SR|

Led by Sonoma County League event champions junior Isabel Garon, sophomore Kiara Miles and freshman Amy Stanfield, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity boys and girls track and field teams have 21 athletes qualify at last Saturday’s SCL championships for the annual North Coast Section area meets.

The Dragons will compete in the 9 a.m. NCS Redwood Empire Meets tomorrow, Saturday, May 23, at Santa Rosa’s Ernie Nevers Field and Track, with the top-seven finishers advancing to the NCS Meet of Champions on Friday and Saturday, May 29 and 30, at the University of California, Berkeley’s Edward’s Stadium.

While Sonoma’s Garon will compete in the NCS girls’ pole vault after winning the league title at 10 feet, 6 inches, both Miles and Stanfield will be racing in multiple events at the Redwood Empire meets as SCL three-event champions, as well as members of the Lady Dragons’ relay teams.

Miles will compete in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, and the 100 hurdles after winning the SCL events with times of 12.77, 26.11 and 16.27, respectively, and she will run in the 1,600 relays.

Stanfield’s impressive and grueling SCL title trifecta included capturing (in order) the 1,600, 400 and 800 races in times of 5 minutes, 21.76 seconds, 1:01.09 and 2:26.20, respectively, but she will drop the 800 for NCS, where she’ll run in the 1,600, 400 and on the 1,600 relay team.

Also competing in the NCS Redwood Empire Meet for the Lady Dragons are junior Madeline Libbey in the 1,600 and 3,200; sophomore Hannah Ford-Monroe in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and the 400 relay; sophomore Grace Cutting in the 300 hurdles and 1,600 relay; frosh Emma Maggioncalda in the 100 hurdles and 400 relay; sophomore Madeline Cashel in the 3,200; frosh Sydney Von Gober in the 800; sophomore Katie Stovall in the 1,600 relay; and sophomore Annabelle Stava and frosh Nashielly Canetas in the 400 relay.

The Sonoma boys competing in the NCS Redwood Empire Meet include junior Edwin Reyes in the 400 and both the 400 and 1,600 relays; senior Ian Sloop in the high jump and pole vault; junior Travis Claeys in the 1,600 and 3,200; senior Ben Andrews-Amarantes in the pole vault; sophomore Noah Bartolome in the 110 hurdles; seniors Brian Casillas and Graham Herder in both the 400 and 1,600 relays; junior David Lopez in the 400 relay; and sophomore Angel Barcenas in the 1,600 relay.
