Dragons muffle Piner with Meyn 2-hitter

Softball girls win on forfeit, host finale, honor seniors today, boys end Friday|

Hoping to bounce back quickly from their first Sonoma County League setback last Tuesday when they fell to Petaluma, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys felt confident they would rebound Friday night because their ace was on the mound.

Junior Maclean Meyn fell two batters short of pitching another perfect game, but still the Dragons jumped back on the SCL-winning road with a 3-0 triumph over Piner at Arnold Field.

Improving his league mound record to a 6-0, Meyn fired a two-hitter with just three strikeouts, but inducing 10 groundouts, for the complete-game shutout win.

Sonoma was also led by senior CJ Vitale’s double, single and run scored; junior Will Lennon’s single and RBI; senior Kyle Garcia’s single and run; and senior Seth August’s run.

The Dragons play their final regular-season road game tonight at league rival Healdsburg, before hosting SCL foe El Molino in their finale at 7 p.m. Friday night, May 15, at Arnold Field.

Preceding Friday evening’s “call to play ball,” they will honor their seniors – Seth August, Thomas Crumly, Kyle Dunevent, Abel Fragoza, Kyle Garcia, Jack Hart and CJ Vitale.

It was a bizarre ending in last Thursday’s SCL game at the high school field as Sonoma’s varsity softball girls had an 11-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when visiting Healdsburg’s players walked off the field and the coach forfeited the contest because she felt the home team was stealing bases with a big lead.

With the forfeiture win, the Lady Dragons, who defeated Healdsburg 12-2 on the road in their first league meeting, improved their SCL second-place record to 9-2 as they stay on the heels of the unbeatean first-place Petaluma girls (10-0), who they host in their season finale today at the high school field.

Before today’s 5 p.m. first pitch, Sonoma will honor its three seniors – Hannah Herrick, Shawny McVeigh and Nicole Reed – in a pregame ceremony.
