Petaluma deals Dragons 1st SCL loss

Longtime rivals will be co-champs by winning out, Sonoma hosts ?Piner tonight|

Riding an eight-game Sonoma County League winning streak and with a chance to put themselves on the threshold of clinching an SCL title outright, the front-running Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys traveled to Petaluma on Tuesday and ran into a determined longtime rival that was sitting alone in second place.

After standout junior Maclean Meyn – Sonoma’s leading hitter and ace pitcher, who was doing the catching – doubled to open the top of the second inning, he was left stranded and the Dragons then committed three infield errors, leading to five unearned runs for Petaluma, which came out a 7-2 winner to split the season series.

Sonoma was paced by Meyn’s double, single and run scored; sophomore Shane O’Malley’s two singles; sophomore Carson Snyder’s single and run; and senior Kyle Dunevent and junior Niko DeTorres single each.

With the win, the Trojans have a 9-1 league record and a first-place edge because they have played one more game than Sonoma (8-1), and will wrap up their season against Elsie Allen and El Molino.

The Dragons finish the SCL regular season hosting Piner at 7 p.m. tonight at Arnold Field, followed by a clash Tuesday evening, May 12, at Healdsburg, before playing the finale Friday night, May 15, against visiting El Molino at Arnold Field, with the seniors being honored prior to the 7 p.m. start.
