Dragons blank Healdsburg on Meyn 2-hitter

Sonoma softball girls fall to defending SCL champ Petaluma|

With their two strong junior starting pitchers, right-hander Maclean Meyn and left-hander Max Yankovich, forming a formidable two-man starting rotation, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys remained undefeated and in first place in the Sonoma County League by posting their fifth straight win.

Taking his mound turn following Yankovich’s solid complete-game win over Piner, Meyn, who already has a five-inning perfect-game victory over Elsie Allen under his belt, dominated Healdsburg with seven shut-down innings in sparking the Dragons to a convincing 8-0 triumph Friday afternoon at Arnold Field.

Along with Meyn, Sonoma was led past the visiting Greyhounds by senior Kyle Garcia and sophomore Shane O’Malley’s single, RBI and run scored each; Meyn’s single and two runs; senior Thomas Crumly’s single and RBI; a single and run apiece by seniors CJ Vitale and Kyle Dunevent, and sophomore Ethan Vitale; senior Seth August’s RBI; and junior Will Lennon’s run.

The first-place Dragons travel to Forestville today to face league foe El Molino and, hopefully, complete the first half of the 12-game schedule unbeaten.

Scoring two runs in the top of the second inning last Thursday at Petaluma, Sonoma’s young varsity softball girls took a 2-1 lead over the defending SCL champion, and looked to have taken the momentum swing in the big league showdown. Unfortunately, the lead and momentum were short-lived as Petaluma tied the score in the bottom of the second, then put two-spots up in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings and handed the Lady Dragons a 6-2 loss after out-hitting them 13-8.

Pacing Sonoma were sophomore Hayden Pearce’s two-for-four; sophomores Bella Fanucchi and Maddie Lentini’s single and RBI each; sophomores Isabel Hernandez and Kasey Richards’ single and run scored apiece; and senior Hannah Herrick and sophomore Erin Atkinson’s single each.

The Lady Dragons have a bye today and then host SCL foe El Molino on Thursday, April 23, at the high school field.
