Dragons rally can’t catch Casa

Sonoma baseball ?boys host Elsie in ?tonight's SCL opener|

Wrapping up their preseason nonleague schedule against a former Sonoma County League rival, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys hoped to earn not only a victory, but a jolt of momentum heading into tonight’s 7 p.m. SCL opener, when they host Elsie Allen at Arnold Field.

Unfortunately, the Dragons could get neither a win; nor momentum in Wednesday’s clash at Arnold Field against longtime foe Casa Grande, which now competes in the North Bay League after many years of claiming SCL titles.

Falling into an early 6-1 hole, then trailing 10-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Sonoma took advantage of an error and four straight walks to scratch out a one-out rally and plate four consecutive runs to cut its deficit to 11-8, with the tying run at the plate.

But the visiting Gauchos held off the late charge and left the Valley with an 11-8 win.

Pacing the Sonoma boys were junior Maclean Meyn’s double, single and two RBIs and two runs scored; sophomore Carson Snyder’s double and two runs; junior Will Lennon and sophomore Shane O’Malley’s single and two RBIs each; senior Kyle Dunevent’s single and two runs; senior CJ Vitale’s two runs and an RBI; and senior Abel Fragoza’s RBI.

The Dragons face defending champion Analy Tuesday, April 7, in Sebastopol, before hosting longtime SCL rival Petaluma Friday night, April 10, at Arnold Field.
