The Sonoma Stompers have partnered with Sonoma Little League to charter a new intermediate division, which was recently announced by Stompers President and CEO, Eric Gullotta, and SLL President, Jay Gruendle.

“Little League International created this new division to provide players with an opportunity to transition incrementally from Little League’s 46/60 field to a full size 60/90 field, which, in Sonoma, is what they will play on in Babe Ruth and high school,” Gruendle said. “This really is a national response from Little League to adapt to the changing environment of youth baseball, which not only has to compete with travel ball programs, but other sports in general.  Our goal is to offer another level of baseball that will keep players interested and allow them to develop their skills accordingly.”

The SLL’s 50/70 intermediate division is for 13 year-olds, and is played on a baseball field with 70 feet between bases and a distance of 50 feet from the pitching mound to home plate, with standard Little League dimensions including a 46-foot distance between the mound and home plate, and 60 feet from base to base. The Babe Ruth division dimensions are the same ones used in high school, college and the pros – 60 feet from home to the mound, and 90-foot base paths – with games set for seven innings, with leadoffs and open-base stealing allowed.

Sonoma’s first two 50-70 teams are the Stompers and the Rawhide, which is named for the Stomper team’s mascot, and the first game was played last Friday at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park Field.
